HMQ has performed marimba orchestra concerts with the percussion students of Arizona State University and San Diego State University, and they will be featured performers in late 2021 for the International Marimba Orchestra in Kutztown, PA, and Indianapolis, IN. This kind of spectacle, ensembles ranging from 25-100 marimba players, is an important part of the history of classical marimba in America. HMQ will premiere Kevin Romanski's Concerto for Marimba Quartet and Orchestra with the National Composers Orchestra in 2023.Ī unique feature of HMQ's regular performing engagements includes organizing marimba orchestra performances with students and communities. They are slated to perform those works with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Wind Ensemble in 2021 and Efrain Amaya's Marahuaka with the Minot Symphony Orchestra in 2022. In 2021, HMQ performed Coley's arrangements of Gottschalk's Grande Tarantelle and A Scott Joplin Ragtime Medley with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. That season also saw the premiere of Coley's Rivers of Rage Concerto with the Millikin University Percussion Ensemble. During the 2019-2020 season, they released an album entitled VISION and collaborated with the Dubuque Arts Council on a two-week residency in twenty different schools. HMQ’s 2018-2019 season further highlighted works written for Heartland Marimba, including Alex Orfaly’s Fôr Marimbas, Steven Simpson’s Fluidity, Matthew Coley’s Turbulence, and The Principle of Vibration by Brett William Dietz. In 2018, HMQ had the honor of being the ensemble in residence for the Society of Composers National Conference in Tacoma, Washington, and premiered works with the University of Puget Sound Wind Ensemble, Gerard Morris, conductor. Comprised of four distinctly creative forces (Ujjal Bhattacharyya, Matthew Coley, Marco Schirripa, and Hannah Weaver) HMQ exemplifies Heartland Marimba’s mission to develop and disseminate the classical marimba art form in both academic and community contexts. The group seeks to give a platform to the music of American composers in its programming and continues to expand its repertoire with works from composers worldwide. The Heartland Marimba Quartet (HMQ) was established in 2016 by acclaimed marimba soloist Matthew Coley and has done more than 140 concerts since its inception. Spring Tour #1 TBA – HMQ will be visiting the Pittsburgh area for events! Spring Tour #2 – HMQ will perform with the Minot Symphony Orchestra and at the Hastings Arts Center, among other events.
